What should I do if I didn't receive my copy of BPI?

Editorial

How do I submit an article to BPI?

You may submit your article to editor-in-chief S. Anne Montgomery or senior technical editor Cheryl Scott by emailing the Word document to amontgomery@bioprocessintl.com or cscott@bioprocessintl.com.

What's length should my article be?

We prefer a minimum of 2,500 words, and a maximum of about 5,000. We are however, willing to publish the article in multiple parts in separate issues. More information about this can be found in the Guidelines for Authors.

Does every article submission undergo peer review? How does that work?

Most articles are reviewed by 1-3 of our editorial advisors or other experts in the industry. The editors alone review most business-related "focus-on" articles. The more technical your content, or the more regulatory interpretation involved, the more likely we are to send it out for review. Review can take from two weeks to two months depending on the time of year and who's available - and some revisions are usually requested about half the time. (Most common request: More references!)

How do I submit artwork with an article to BPI?

We prefer artwork to be submitted as an .eps or .ai file, but we accept most electronic file formats including (in order of preference) .pdf, .psd, .tif, .jpg, even PowerPoint or Word/Excel documents. Photos need to be at least 300 dpi for good quality in printing, and figures need to be editable. We would rather you sent the artwork as individual files, rather than embedded in your article text. This makes it easier for us to work with and keep track of the art. Please include caption information (including copyright information) in either a separate document, or at the end of your manuscript.

Where do you get that beautiful cover art?

We accept photographs, photomicrographs, and computer-generated images as possible cover art. There is no payment, but you get full credit in the cover caption on our Table of Contents. We prefer .tif, .psd, .eps, .pdf, .ai, or .jpg files - of 300 dpi resolution at the printable size (at least about 8.5" x 8.5") - or actual photographs/slides that we can scan. If you send a hardcopy, please don't send your only copy; we'll do our best to safeguard and return them (if necessary), but we don't want to be responsible for precious photos!

I'd like to submit a press release about an upcoming event to BPI. Who do I send it to, and when do you need it for publication?

Please send all event releases to associate editor, at . We publish events that are occurring in the month after publication (for example, the March issue will include events occurring in April or later), and we finalize the issues two months prior to their appearance (so an April event to be included in the March issue needs to be submitted to us by January 1st).

My company has a new product, piece of informational literature, or service that we would like to have BPI cover in the Global Marketplace section. How do we get it in?

You may submit product, literature, and service releases for consideration for the Global Marketplace section to . If you are aiming for a specific issue, you must submit the release two months prior to that issue (a release for the April issue needs to be submitted by February 1st).

What about news releases? What kind do you want? And who gets it?

All the editors collect news from numerous sources, but for best results you can send something straight to . It's easier to say what we don't want than what we do want: no executive promotions ("people news"); no phase 1, 2, 3 results; no financing data; no vendor company facilities/collaborations/financial information. Vendor submissions are limited to major mergers between companies as well as some contract manufacturing new facilities. New product and services will be considered for the Global Marketplace section (see above). We're very interested in the activities of major industry and scientific associations as well as international regulatory news, biopharmaceutical product approvals, bioethics issues, industry issues, and major research that may affect product pipelines in the future.

Who do I contact for copies of back issues and articles?

You may find all of our back issues and articles on our web site in the archives. If you can't find what you're looking for, please send an email inquiry to .

What about reprints?

Authors and others interested in buying reprints of individual articles and series can contact Kim Rafferty (krafferty@bioprocessintl.com). Both color and black-and-white versions are available.

My company is buying an ad. Can we place editorial in the same issue?

Editorial content is subject to review by the editors and usually editorial advisors as well. We are happy to consider submissions by vendor company authors, but we cannot guarantee acceptance or appearance in a particular issue. The editors schedule upcoming issue line-ups based on manuscripts in-hand and in review - We may "pencil you in" with a particular issue's theme or bonus distribution in mind, but we cannot promise its appearance in that issue until about 3 months prior to the publication date.
