Jefferson Institute selects Gyros tech for bioprocess training

Philadelphia’s Jefferson Institute for Bioprocessing (JIB) will incorporate buffers and titer kits supplied by Gyros Protein Technologies in its training programs. JIB opened its doors in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania last June with support from Ireland’s National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT). The center has now inked a contract with immunoassay and peptide synthesis firm Gyros Protein Technologies – now part of Mesa Laboratories – to use its immunoassay system and ready-to-use kits as part of its bioprocessing training programs.…

GE and Guangzhou gov bring bioprocess training to China

A single-use bioprocessing training facility in Guangzhou will help attract and retain biopharma talent in the burgeoning China market, says GE Healthcare. Bioprocess vendor GE Healthcare Life Sciences and Guangzhou Development District government have invested a total of $10 million (€9 million) to establish a biomanufacturing training center in the Guangdong province in China. The Guangzhou Bioprocess Academy aims to train over 1,000 people annually when it opens in September next year and is needed to feed the the rapid…

Launch of the First Vaccine Bioprocess Training Program: A Standardized but Flexible Course to Boost the Global Vaccine Industry

Based on the many forms that modern vaccines can take, their manufacturing is complicated. Unlike monoclonal antibodies (MAbs), vaccine manufacturers have no “template” platform to follow. Most vaccine producers develop their manufacturing processes from scratch, a prospect that can be challenging for small to mid-sized companies. Bioprocessing is the key challenge in vaccine manufacturing. Without a well-developed and understood process, a manufacturer will face serious challenges in commercial production: e.g., low yields, high costs, and difficulties in meeting quality standards.…

Inside Jefferson: $7m bioprocess training institute opens in PA

The Jefferson Institute for Bioprocessing (JIB) has opened its doors in Pennsylvania. Bioprocess Insider visited to find out how the site, supported by Ireland’s NIBRT and GE Healthcare, will aid the bioprocess industry. In June 2018, plans were laid down for a site in Pennsylvania for an education and training institute to support the staffing gaps in the bioprocessing space. A year on, the Jefferson Institute for Bioprocessing (JIB) has opened, with help from a $7 million (€6.2 million) investment…

Training and ‘sea turtles’ support WuXi Biologics’ growing China footprint

WuXi Biologics talks Chinese talent recruitment as it begins building an eighth biomanufacturing facility in the country, this one with 48,000 L of single-use bioreactor capacity. The latest addition to contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) WuXi Biologics’ bioproduction network is a 1.3 million square-foot center in Chengdu, Southwest China. The facility will include drug development and commercial manufacturing capabilities and boast 48,000 L in bioreactor capacity. According to CEO Chris Chen, the capacity breaks down to 12 x 4,000…

Addressing Knowledge Gaps and Skills Development: Modular Training Keeps the Bioindustry at the Leading Edge

One major challenge facing the global bioindustry today is finding talented individuals to work in the type of highly skilled interdisciplinary environments necessary for effective bioprocess development. Ideally, such individuals require a combination of technical knowledge and expertise spanning biological sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Numerous industry surveys have repeatedly stressed the lack of suitably trained individuals equipped with necessary skills to work at the biology−engineering interface to meet the growing and changing demands of industry. The challenge is…

Hands-On Training for Biopharmaceutical Careers: Trainees Gain Practical Experience in Realistic Production Environments

At the April meeting of the BPI International Summit (25−26 April 2017) delegates were treated to a tour of a new training facility. The Biotech Training Facility is about a 20-minute drive from the Amsterdam airport and located in the Leiden Bioscience Park. The park houses companies that employ ~18,000 life science workers. In addition, the Leiden University and the Leiden Academic Medical Center complement the dynamic high-tech environment that facilitates establishment of such a knowledge and experience center as…
