Thermo Fisher launches Dynabeads tech to support mRNA production

Thermo Fisher Scientific has introduced a customized Dynabeads solutions, which it says supports synthesis and purification of mRNA for manufacturing and vaccine development. According to the firm, the Dynabeads Streptavidin for in vitro transcription and Dynabeads for carboxylic acid for RNA purification solutions can support messenger RNA (mRNA) synthesis and purification for vaccine development and production. Furthermore, Thermo Fisher says that when combined with its TheraPure portfolio of enzymes and nucleotides, it provides a simplified workflow that allows mRNA firms…

Star-spangled Gamma looks to disrupt the bioprocess space

Gamma Biosciences presented its portfolio of tech companies at Biotech Week Boston and spoke about its role as a disruptor in the consolidated bioprocess sector. “Gamma was built on this notion that advanced therapy manufacturing to date has largely been served by the biologics industry; the technologies that have been brute forced into our industry to make things work and get products to market,” Gamma Biosciences’ CTO Phil Vanek told BioProcess Insider at BPI East – part of Biotech Week…

Sartorius showcases freezing, filling, and mAb capturing tech

Bioprocess giant Sartorius launched four products at Biotech Week Boston in September 2022. Miriam Monge, head of Marketing Fluid Management Technologies, walks us through them. First on display on the floor of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center was Sartorius’ Celsius FFT, a large-volume bulk drug substance storage and transport system. According to Monge, such an offering is unique in its scale, and as a full platform, consisting of a blast freezer, a fill and drain station, a lift, a…

Miltenyi looks to offer ‘top-to-bottom’ services as tech meets CDMO

Miltenyi Biotec says it is uniquely placed in the advanced therapy space to support developers with the full gamut of technologies and chemical/biological substances. Founded in 1989, Miltenyi has moved from a cell separation firm into a full cell and gene services firm, offering a host of services including as a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO). “What makes Miltenyi unique is we not only supply the expertise from both the technological, biological and even regulatory expertise, but we have…

Astrea unveils nanofiber-based lentivirus purification tech at BWB

Astrea Bioseparations developed and launched Nereus LentiHERO in just 180 days and says the nanofiber-based technology radically transforms lentivirus purification. Bioseparation products and services firm Astrea celebrated the launch of Nereus LentiHERO at Biotech Week Boston in September at a crowded booth on the show floor. The lentiviral vector (LVV) purification tech incorporates AstreAdept, the firm’s proprietary nanofiber material, which addresses the challenges associated with purifying the large and fragile products used in cell and gene therapy. Marc Hummersone, senior…

Getinge showcases bioreactor tech post-Applikon integration

After acquiring Applikon Biotechnology in 2020, Getinge says it is focused on serving the bioprocess space as it does the medical tech industry. “Getinge has 90% of its business going into hospitals, like ventilators or operating rooms, but we also have a life sciences unit and we have acquired Applikon in January 2020 to become part of that business unit,” Matthijs Niemeijer, head of Product Management at Getinge told BioProcess Insider at BPI Boston, part of Biotech Week Boston. Applikon…

BASF leveraging chemical heritage in bio excipient space

Chemical giant BASF says owning its own manufacturing facilities gives it full control of volume and chemistry and is a differentiator in the biopharma ingredients space. As the world’s largest chemical firm, it is no surprise BASF plays in numerous markets. In biopharma, the firm is known for its small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) business but the German multinational also serves the biologics manufacturing space. “For a few years we have been providing the biomanufacturing industry with our products…

Cytiva: Standardization key to fluid management prowess

Standardization is critical to improve fluid management operations within a biomanufacturing facility, says Cytiva at BPI Boston. “Fluid management, while it’s not one of the most technically complex parts of bioprocess, it’s one of the more logistically complex aspects,” Erik Storm, fluid management platform leader at Cytiva, told BioProcess Insider at BPI Boston – part of Biotech Week Boston. “That’s because of the large number of parts that you have to have on hand to actually run a single-use facility.…

Platforms are pivotal to pandemic speed, says BMS

Only companies that have strong platforms will be able to meet specific timelines, says Bristol-Myers Squibbs’ Jim Xu. As COVID-19 transitions into an endemic, delegates at Biotech Week Boston discussed the challenges concerning the upstream process development process. Jianlin (Jim) Xu, scientific director, biologics development at BMS, explained told a packed room that monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are difficult to produce with complex glycosylation profile, process related impurities, and amino acid oxidation. Xu also outlined other challenges, which included bioreactor operation…

PerkinElmer pulls out CGT platform at Biotech Week Boston

PerkinElmer says that its Cellaca PLX system is the cell analysis solution to streamline cell and gene therapy research and production. BioProcess Insider is back at BPI Boston – part of Biotech Week Boston – after three years away where among the many exhibitors PerkinElmer has launched its Cellaca PLX image cytometry system. According to the company, the technology designed by the firm’s Nexcelom unit offers researchers expanded cell sample critical quality attributes (CQA) beyond flow cytometry and staining methods.…
